South Africa’s Hazyview village is a true gem for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers, offering a selection of serene retreats right on the door step of the world-renowned Kruger National Park.
When planning your visit to this picturesque destination, understanding something about the seasonal variations in weather, wildlife, and special events can be helpful.
One of the most appealing times to experience the magic of the area is right now, during the vibrant season of spring, as this part of the world comes alive with renewed energy and beauty.
At The Reserve in Hazyview, we have one of the most secluded and beautiful spots to stay. As the spring months come back, we are getting ready to welcome guests to enjoy one of the best seasons of the year.

Spring is a Symphony of Renewal and a Great Time to Visit Hazyview
As South Africa transitions into spring, typically from September to November, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. The once-dry terrain bursts into life with an explosion of colourful wildflowers, and the lush greenery returns, as does the heavy, lifegiving rains.
Advantages of Visiting in Spring
- Floral Extravaganza: Spring in Hazyview is a visual delight, with the landscape adorned in a riot of colours. Wildflowers, including vibrant reds, yellows, and purples, carpet the fields and forests, creating a breath taking backdrop for your stay.
- Moderate Weather: Spring offers mild and comfortable weather, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, bird watching, and game drives in teh nearby Kruger National Park. The temperatures are pleasant, ranging from the low 15°C to 25°C, although the occasional nippy day is not unheard of as winter struggles to release its grip sometimes.
- Wildlife Encounters: The rejuvenated landscape attracts an array of wildlife, as animals and birds emerge to take advantage of the abundant food sources. Spring is an excellent time for birdwatching, with numerous migratory species returning to the region. You’ll also have a good chance of spotting baby animals during this season.
- Special Events: South Africa celebrates various cultural and wildlife-related events during the spring months. Consider timing your visit to coincide with events such as the annual South African National Parks Week, where entrance to Kruger National Park is free for locals, or local festivals celebrating the season. It is also South Africa’s Heritage month, while this year (2023) we are also looking forward to watching our boys play in the rugby world cup!
- Fewer Crowds: Compared to the peak summer tourist season, spring sees fewer crowds, allowing for a more tranquil and intimate experience at Hazyview Lodge. You can relish the beauty of the area with fewer fellow travellers, creating a sense of exclusivity.
The Other Seasons also have a Lot to Look Forward too
While spring has its unique charm, the other seasons in Hazyview also offer distinct advantages:
- Summer (December to February): This season boasts lush green landscapes and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, as animals gather around water sources. However, it can be hot and humid, with occasional magnificent thunderstorms.
- Autumn (March to May): Autumn is marked by comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds, making it an excellent time for a more relaxed visit. The vegetation remains lush, and wildlife is still active.
- Winter (June to August): Although it’s the dry season and vegetation is sparse, winter is perfect for game viewing, as animals gather around water sources. The cool, dry weather is also ideal for exploring nearby attractions like the Panorama Route.
With Spring knocking at the door, now is the best time to book your stay at The Reserve. We have the best views and rooms, and the scenery is simply gorgeous at this time of the year.
